Learn

As a leader in conservation education, we understand that experiencing AWE is often the first step in becoming an ally! From Nature Play and Safari Camps to school field trips and Zoo-to-You classroom visits, we cultivate wonder on a daily basis.

🌙 Meet some of the Zoo’s most mysterious residents: our two aye-ayes, Bellatrix and Tonks!

Native only to Madagascar, aye-ayes are the largest nocturnal primates and some of the rarest animals you’ll ever see.

With their oversized ears and a special “tapper finger,” aye-ayes can hear insects crawling under tree bark, then chew through wood with rodent-like teeth to scoop them out. Here at the Zoo, we recreate this by hiding treats in cardboard, wood, and metal boxes for them to discover.

💡 Fun fact: Tonks was even featured in National Geographic’s Photo Ark as a baby!

Because they’re nocturnal, our aye-ayes live in the Zoo’s nocturnal exhibit, located inside Emerald Forest, where their light cycle is reversed. If you stop by, take a moment to let your eyes adjust—you may just catch these spooky-cool lemurs in action.

✨ Rare, fascinating, and often misunderstood, aye-ayes are a reminder that the night is full of wonder. Come meet Trixie and Tonks on your next visit!

🦧 Happy 2nd Birthday, Siska! 🍌

To celebrate Siska’s 2nd birthday, her Animal Care team turned her habitat into a party wonderland, complete with tropical fruits, colorful streamers and paper chains, and cozy blankets for nesting. Just like any toddler, she wasted no time diving into the fun!

Every birthday milestone is a reminder of just how important orangutans are to the future of their species. 💚🦧
